The Building takes the shape of a very compact square, positioned according to the points of the compass, and makes use of the contrast between an apparently opaque outside and a wide and luminous inside.
Open onto the outside, his flowing spaces allow great vistas according to a plan which set up a clear hierarchy between technical and service premises on the one hand, and exhibition and reception spaces on the other hand.
The light, profuse and variable according to the sun trajectory, permits to exclude the use of electric sources most of the time.
The permanent exhibition rooms, from which particular points of the landscape can be viewed, are organized in a route surrounding a central room which can be used for temporary exhibitions or for the presentation of paintings available in reserve collections.
The walls of this room, built according to a dynamic helix figure, are 7.20 metres high and thanks to their specific system of natural lighting, allow to hang paintings of a very large size, whereas the other rooms are 4.80 metres high on average.
In the hall hangs the monumental "Planchemouton" (4.20 m x 14.34 m) and several functions are grouped together : the reception, a small public studio, a consultation room on a mezzanine, offices, the bathroom.
The building is mostly made of wood : the framework, the roof, the frontage, the sides and the back in boards of larch.
The whole technical networks (ventilation, rainwaters, electricity) are installed in the thickness of the walls or in the underfloor space.
